PORTFOLIO PREPARATION

Portfolio Preparation

I have been working as a Tutor and Mentor since 2009 and have helped many art students who are applying for the next stage of their studies. This has included Personal Statement support, Portfolio Preparation, additional text writing support and Interview Preparation. The creative subjects I focus on include Fine Art, Fashion & Design, Photography, Textiles, Drama, Ceramics, Glass, Architecture, Product Design, Graphic Design and Interior Design.  I am happy to say that every single student has been successful in their applications and have gone on to study at BRIT School, Central St. Martins, Slade, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, Oxford Brooks, Goldsmiths, CalArts USA and Parsons to name a few.

As most applications are time sensitive it is important that the student comes prepared and ready to work. The first session will be used to create a plan, set goals, talk through actions and share any information about the application process. It is also essential that the student has collated all their sketchbooks and photographs from any external projects. I have also produced a ‘Portfolio Handbook’ that will aid in the creation of the portfolio and will be shared with the student during the first session via a dedicated and secure google drive they will have access to. It is also crucial that the student allocates additional time towards working on their portfolio outside of the sessions, so we can complete project pages as quickly and efficiently as possible. This process helps to be prepared to work independently once in higher education.

Rolling Sessions

Rolling sessions are for students looking to create a variety of projects. I would help them select works that are suitable, that show their creative talent and also display a range of materials the student has explored. I can also help the student create new projects where needed - this can also be a useful tool as I can introduce the student to new materials, like air drying clay, which showcases another skill the student has attained. I can assist in any additional research that might be needed and support the writing of their personal statement. As the student gets closer to their interview date I will help them prepare by running through questions that usually come up in interview.

Rolling sessions via Zoom:

I recommend booking a minimum of x2 1 hour sessions per week until all work is complete. The Rolling sessions can run up to 5 months depending on the number or projects that need to be completed.

Rolling sessions via Zoom and in person at my studio:

I recommend booking a minimum of x1 1 hour session per week via Zoom and x1 2 hour in person session until all work is complete. The Rolling sessions can run up to 5 months depending on the number or projects that need to be completed.

Intensive Courses

In the Intensive course we focus on creating one project from start to finish, including mood boards/initial research, ideas development and a final outcome. These sessions can be booked in three ways:

  1. x1 hour per day for 5 days online and the student works outside of the sessions more independently

  2. x5/6 hours in one day and we work together to complete the project. Please note that for this option the student needs to have some ideas prior to the sessions

  3. x5/6 hour per day for 1 week and we work together to complete the project

These sessions usually take place at my studio based in Wimbledon, London. There are easy transport links and parking is also available. For students who live outside of London I would recommend keeping these sessions to Zoom.

Testimonials

“I never felt very confident when it came to drawing and always felt very intimidated. Kira really helped me to open up and I LOVED getting the chance to just play for two hours. Initially I thought it would be a drawing class, but it is so much more than that, almost like a meditation. I am looking forward to my next class with Kira!” Student, 2017
